PICKLEBALL PADDLES

There are literally 1000's of paddles on the market and prices vary from entry level around £30 up to top level in the multiple £100's. Please do your own research and if you are able to try before you buy, that would be best. If you attend Pickleball Festivals (friendly round robin games), there's always a paddle shop in attendance and you can borrow paddles to try and see which fit you best. 

FIBREGLASS

• Material: Composite fibreglass face layered over a core (polymer, Nomex, aluminium).

• Performance Characteristics:

  • Power: Known for generating more power, thanks to its flexibility and “trampoline” effect when striking the ball.

  • Control: Decent control but generally less precise than graphite or carbon fibre.

  • Durability: Durable but tends to wear faster under heavy use compared to graphite and carbon fibre.

  • Weight: Often heavier than graphite and carbon fibre, contributing to the power.

  • Best For: Players who want easy power and play offensively.

  • Price Range: More affordable, making it accessible to beginners and intermediate players.

GRAPHITE 

• Material: Lightweight and stiff graphite face over the core.

• Performance Characteristics:

  • Control: Excellent control and precision, ideal for dinks, soft shots, and strategic play.

  • Power: Offers less power than fibreglass but allows skilled players to generate power through technique.

  • Durability: Highly durable; maintains performance characteristics over time.

  • Weight: Typically lighter, allowing for faster reaction times and improved manoeuvrability.

  • Best For: Players who prioritise touch, control, and finesse in their game.

  • Price Range: Mid-range to high-end, depending on brand and construction.

CARBON FIBRE

• Material: Premium carbon fibre face layered over a core, known for its rigidity and strength.

• Performance Characteristics:

  • Control: Superior control and feel due to the stiffness and responsiveness of carbon fibre. Provides excellent feedback for touch shots.

  • Power: Balanced power generation. While it doesn’t have the same “trampoline effect” as fibreglass, its stiffness allows skilled players to hit with controlled force.

  • Spin: Carbon fibre excels in spin potential, offering more grip on the ball for players who like to manipulate their shots.

  • Durability: Extremely durable; carbon fibre resists wear and maintains its performance for a long time.

  • Weight: Lightweight to mid-range, depending on the paddle’s design, offering a good mix of manoeuvrability and stability.

  • Best For: Advanced players who want premium performance, combining control, spin, and power.

  • Price Range: Typically the most expensive due to its high-performance material.

THERMO-FORMED + CARBON FIBRE

• Material: Premium carbon fibre face with thermoformed construction (heat and pressure bonded), creating a unibody-style paddle where the face and edge are fused for enhanced structural integrity.

• Performance Characteristics:

  • Control: Solid, stable feel due to the thermoformed build. Slightly firmer response than non-thermoformed paddles, offering excellent directional control when technique is clean. Less vibration and more consistency across the face.

  • Power: Enhanced power compared to standard carbon fibre paddles. The thermoforming process increases rigidity and energy transfer, resulting in more “pop” and easier depth from the baseline.

  • Spin: Outstanding spin potential. Raw or textured carbon fibre surfaces combined with structural stiffness allow players to generate heavy topspin and slice with confidence.

  • Durability: Highly durable construction. The thermoformed edge and reinforced perimeter reduce delamination risk and improve long-term structural stability.

  • Weight: Typically mid-weight, often slightly more head-heavy due to added perimeter foam or edge reinforcement, which increases plough-through and stability on contact.

  • Sweet Spot: Often larger and more forgiving due to foam-injected edges and expanded hitting surface stability.
